I’m a “ducks in a row” kind of person. When I sit down to write, I make sure my computer and notebook are organized and neat on my desk, I have the right music in my headphones for optimal productivity, and then I feel resistance.
Is this a good enough topic to write about?
Can I write a whole post on this?
Will this help anyone?
And the one that gets me most: Who am I to write about this?
Seth Godin wrote a blog post a while back titled “Whatcha gonna do with that duck?” in which he talked about people’s tendency to spend their time getting their ducks in a row and not deciding what to actually do with the duck, which is far more important.
My blog has kind of been like that for me. Every time I sit down to write, I feel resistance. The website, colors, logo, and pictures all look great, thanks to the talents of my beautiful wife. I spend all of my time getting my ducks in a row and when it comes time to actually put words on paper that could have a positive impact on someone reading them, the doubt creeps in.
So rather than get my ducks in a row one more time, I’m going to start doing something with that duck.
Is this a good enough topic to write about? If it came into my brain, it must be. I guess I’ll find out if it’s good enough for someone to want to read.
Can I write a whole post on this? Get started and find out!
Will this help anyone? Maybe not. But it’s guaranteed NOT to help anyone if it doesn’t get written.
Who am I to write about this? I’m just a husband, dad, and professional who is working every day to get better. I don’t know if that qualifies me, but I’ll take a shot.
What are you resisting today that needs action? Stop trying to get your ducks perfectly lined up in a row and go do it!
